Click Here: Working on the Railroad, Family Fixins, I Love the Arts, and More

August 25th, 2020

SANTA FE – Explore the latest online programming from the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA), bringing the state’s unique blend of cultures into your home through its museums, historic sites, and cultural institutions.

This week includes three outstanding programs:

When the railroad came to New Mexico in 1879, it also brought thousands of employment opportunities across the territory. In addition to the homegrown workforce, the railroad also attracted laborers from Mexico, China, and Europe to the Land of Enchantment. Told through historic and contemporary images from the Palace of the Governors Photo Archives and the The Library of Congress, the New Mexico History Museum exhibit "Working on the Railroad" fosters appreciation for the contributions these people made, included in the story of how the railroad changed the physical and cultural landscape of New Mexico. An online version of this exhibit is now available for viewing.

Do you have an old family recipe for a New Mexican cuisine you’d like to share? The New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heriatge Museum through its Facebook page is asking followers to send in recipes, along with a brief description and photos, to post in a new series called Family Fixins. You can read the first Family Fixins recipe now. Submissions may be emailed to michaela.mcburrows@state.nm.us or FRHM.Education@state.nm.us.

On the New Mexico Museum of Art Facebook and Instagram pages watch a short video by Holly Wilson describing the inspiration behind her work of art "WE NEED A HERO." Her piece is part of the museum’s latest virtual exhibit "Native American Artists Respond to the Theme, ’Protection.’"

Here are other interesting programs from across the Department:

•  The National Hispanic Cultural Center celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. You can learn more about the significant contributions the NHCC has made during the past two decades each Saturday through its Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube accounts.

•  The "I Love the Arts" stories campaign is now live on the New Mexico Arts Instagram page. Follow along using the hashtags #ilovethearts and #Iheartthearts.

•  Learning is fun with Chemistry Kitchen, a new series on the New Mexico Museum of Space History’s YouTube channel. In the latest episode of the series, education director Julie Bryant uses red cabbage to determine if a solution is an acid or a base.

More information related to social media and online resources for each division of DCA is available upon request.
