Click Here: Herd at Farm & Ranch, Young Writers Workshop, Simple Outdoor Activities, and More

January 12th, 2021

Explore the latest online programming from the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA), bringing the state’s unique blend of cultures into your home through its museums, historic sites, and cultural institutions.

This week includes three outstanding programs:

The New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum later this month will begin a new series on its Facebook page called "Herd at the Farm & Ranch." These posts will consist of five-minute interviews with various people, including staff members and others connected to the museum’s mission such as historians, farmers, ranchers, and scientists.

In collaboration with the National Latinx Writers Gathering, the National Hispanic Cultural Center will host a virtual writing workshop for Latinx teens during six consecutive Saturdays via Zoom beginning on Feb. 6. Designed for young writers ages 15-19, this workshop involves creating a playlist of 10 songs that reflects an important moment and/or experience, followed by discussions on those song selections and writing exercises. The deadline to register is January 22, 2021.

Exploring nature doesn’t have to be a grand adventure. Discover 10 activities to do in the outdoors that are fun, simple, and don’t require too much gear, in the latest Quick Trip video on the Sandia Mountain Natural History Center YouTube channel, in partnership with the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science.

Here are other interesting programs from across the Department:

   •   In the latest Virtual Rocketeer Academy video from the New Mexico Museum of Space History, museum educator Mike Shinabery teaches you how to build a rubber band rover housing supplies commonly found inside the home.

   •   The New Mexico Museum of Art is offering virtual content from its current exhibition "For America: Paintings from the National Academy of Design,” including an interactive tour of the exhibit.

   •   Watch the most recent episode of the Friends of History virtual lecture series on the New Mexico History Museum YouTube channel. In this video, author and chile expert Dave DeWitt talks about his new book “Chile Peppers: A Global History.”

More information related to social media and online resources for each division of DCA, including photos, is available upon request.
