MOIFA Continues to Showcase One of the Largest Folk Art Collections

February 9th, 2021

Explore one of the world’s largest folk art collections and much more at the Museum of International Folk Art (MOIFA). The museum, located on beautiful Museum Hill in Santa Fe, safely reopened to the public on Feb. 4, in accordance with COVID-safe practices and public health measures to protect the well-being of patrons. MOIFA is currently open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday, and closed Monday. Visitation is limited to 75 people at any one time.

Visitors can admire eye-catching exhibitions such as “From Combat to Carpet: The Art of Afghan War Rug,” a traveling exhibition featuring more than 40 handwoven rugs with war-related iconography collected during the past four decades. Located in the Hispanic Heritage Wing, “Música Buena: Hispano Folk Music of New Mexico” focuses on the rich history of traditional Hispano music, from the arrival of the Spanish through the present.

Step into the realm of “Yōkai: Ghosts & Demons of Japan.” This ghastly and comical exhibition dives into all things “yōkai” – a catchall word that refers to demons, ghosts, shapeshifters, and “strange” and supernatural beings. Due to precautions related to COVID-19, the exhibition’s interactive components (the monster-making station, the manga lounge, and the monster house) remain temporarily closed.

Located in the in the Girard Wing, “Multiple Visions: A Common Bond” is one of MOIFA’s long-term displays. With more than 10,000 objects to see from around the world, this exhibition continues to enchant museum visitors, staff, and patrons.

Cost of admission is $7 for New Mexico residents and $12 for non-state residents. Children 16 and younger are free. Wednesdays are free for state residents 60 and older. Students receive a $1 discount on admission. State residents are free on the first Sunday of each month. New Mexico foster families are admitted free at all times.

The museum gift shop remains closed for in-person shopping, though customers can find this and other Museum of New Mexico Foundation shops online at https://shopmuseum.org/

Performance spaces and theaters, libraries, classrooms, and collection areas remain closed. The public will not have access to coat checks, lockers, or backpack/purse storage, nor the use of rental equipment such as headsets, portable speakers, strollers, etc., unless required for ADA accessibility. Public programs, special events, and volunteer/docent activities will continue in virtual formats only. Reduced occupancy might result in a wait to gain entry. While queuing for entry, visitors should observe social distancing. Visitors will be required to wear a mask or multilayered face covering.
