Explore the latest online programming from the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA), bringing the state’s unique blend of cultures into your home through its museums, historic sites, and cultural institutions.
This week includes three outstanding programs:
As a prelude to an upcoming exhibition called "Riding Herd with Billy the Kid: The Rise of the Cattle Industry in New Mexico," the New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum has created an interactive map on the rise of the cattle industry in New Mexico on its website. Users can click on various locations on the map to learn more about this wild time in New Mexico history.
Docents at the New Mexico History Museum are hosting live virtual tours this month. Each tour, offered on the Zoom platform, lasts about 50 minutes and features a specific theme or aspect of the museum’s “Telling New Mexico” exhibits. The tours are free, but registration is required. Upon registration, an online link to the selected tour date will be sent via email along with instructions for joining the group.
The popular program Happy Arte Hour at the National Hispanic Cultural Center is back, this time in virtual form. This online art making and social gathering event is geared toward adults and takes place at 6:30 p.m. on the first Thursday of the month, with the next event on April 1. Register here in advance to receive an email with a webpage link to the free event and a list items/art supplies in order to better participate.
Here are other interesting programs from across the Department:
• Have you visited the New Mexico Historic Sites YouTube channel? Watch educational videos featuring many of the wonders found at these state historic sites, from adobe brick-making at Jemez to the “Most Dangerous Art in America” on display at Lincoln.
• On the New Mexico Museum of Art website, check out the workbook activities associated with the exhibition “Word Play,” which features more than 40 works of art in a variety of mediums.
• Learn how to build a “handy” space shuttle glove box using common household products, with help from the Virtual Rocketeer Academy program at the New Mexico Museum of Space History.
