Click Here: Earth Day Celebrations at New Mexico Historic Sites, a New Virtual Exhibit at NHCC, a Look at Planets Beyond Our Solar System, and More

April 21st, 2021

Explore the latest online programming from the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA), bringing the state’s unique blend of cultures into your home through its museums, historic sites, and cultural institutions.

This week includes three outstanding programs:

In celebration of Earth Day, visit the Los Luceros Historic Site Facebook page, which features multiple posts and instructional videos related to the annual event centered on environmental protection and preservation, including a video on how to make seed balls. And on the New Mexico Historic Sites Facebook page on April 24, you can go on a virtual hike at Coronado Historic Site, walking through the ancient village of Kuaua and the trails adjacent to the Rio Grande.

A new virtual art exhibition will launch on the National Hispanic Cultural Center (NHCC) website on Friday, April 23. “Because It’s Time: Unraveling Race and Place in NM,” which was on exhibit at the NHCC Art Museum in 2018, examines race and identity in New Mexico and reflects artistic expression that grapples with the complexities of who we are, how we are understood, and how that impacts the way we live (or don’t) in a variety of places. Featuring 26 works by artists with different experiences in New Mexico, along with other works from the Museum’s permanent collection, the exhibition explores race and place through an intersectional lens, as well as gender, sexuality, class, nationality, and citizenship status from local, national, and international perspectives.

“Herd at the Farm & Ranch” is a bi-monthly video interview series on the New Mexico Farm and Ranch Heritage Museum’s Facebook page, featuring people connected to the museum in some capacity. The next episode, which will post on Thursday, April 22, features longtime volunteer Bob Distlehorst, who’ll talk about growing up on a farm in Illinois and some of the projects he’s been involved with at the Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum.

Here are other interesting programs from across the Department:

  • The Astronomy Club at the New Mexico Museum of Space History takes a look at planets beyond our solar system, how they are discovered, and what it means for the future of mankind. Check out the video on the Museum’s Facebook page.

  • Have you participated in the New Mexico Museum of Art Trivia Tuesday series on the museum’s Instagram account? With themes centered on exhibitions, locations, and artists, new questions appear each Tuesday, and on Wednesday the answer is revealed along with some background information on the topic.

More information related to social media and online resources for each division of DCA, including photos, is available upon request.
