Coming to New Mexico Museum of Art Vladem Contemporary "Off-Center: New Mexico Art, 1970-2000"

April 2nd, 2024

Santa Fe, NM – Prepare to be transported through the kaleidoscopic landscape of New Mexico’s artistic evolution as the New Mexico Museum of Art proudly presents a landmark exhibition, Off-Center: New Mexico Art, 1970-2000. Delving into the transformative three decades that shaped the state’s artistic identity, this captivating showcase promises to be a testament to the magnetic pull that drew artists from far and wide to the land of enchantment. On view June 8, 2024, to May 4, 2025, at the New Mexico Museum of Art Vladem Contemporary.

Set against the backdrop of New Mexico’s rugged terrain, vibrant cultures, and thriving art scene, Off-Center offers a glimpse into a pivotal era where creativity flourished like never before. From the bustling streets of Albuquerque to the tranquil retreats of Taos, this exhibition ventures beyond the well-trodden paths, uncovering hidden gems in communities like Galisteo, Silver City, Las Cruces, Gallup, Truth or Consequence, and Roswell that played unexpected roles in shaping the states artistic narrative. The exhibition will undergo five partial rotations over the course of the year to capture as much of the thematic breadth and as many of the influential artists as possible.

“With more than 125 visionaries contributing to the tapestry of this exhibition, Off-Center weaves together a diverse array of artistic expressions, each reflecting the spirit of its time,” said Christian Waguespack, Head of Curatorial Affairs at NMMOA. “Divided into thematic groups of Place, Spectacle, and Identity, visitors are invited to immerse themselves in a journey that transcends boundaries and embraces the rich tapestry of human experience.”

Off-Center is accompanied by an oral history project, which includes video interviews with many of the living artists featured in the exhibition. A selection of clips from the oral history project will be featured in the exhibition, in addition to being made available through the New Mexico Museum of Art archives for researchers and the public for educational use.

Off-Center stands as a tribute to the state’s unwavering commitment to preserving and celebrating its cultural heritage,” said Dr. Mark White, Executive Director of NMMOA. “From its beginnings in 1978 to its present day, the Department has been a beacon of creativity, nurturing the artistic soul of New Mexico for generations to come.”
